Dr Aness Webster

Assistant Professor and EDI Lead in the Department of Philosophy

What area does your research focus on?

My research is in value theory, broadly construed, to include moral, social, and legal philosophy. I’m particularly interested in philosophy of agency and responsibility as well as the nature of injustice/oppression (and the intersection between these two areas).

What are the other key aspects of your role?

I am a module convener for the 2nd year Feminist Philosophy module and I have taught in Ethics and Social Philosophy modules at both UG and PG level. I am also the EDI Lead for the Philosophy Department.

What do you like to do outside of work?

I enjoy both nature (esp. hiking in Scotland as I live in Edinburgh) and city life (bars, restaurants, music, comedy, etc). I also enjoy reading (fiction mainly), watching sports (tennis, hockey, rugby) and baking.

What do you think you could particularly offer mentoring support with?

I could offer support to those who are trying to navigate mainly white-male spaces as a woman of colour. I would also be well-suited to help developing academic career progression and getting ready for the job market in Philosophy (in UK, US/Canada, and New Zealand/Australia).
