Dr Nafhesa Ali
Lecturer in Social Sciences
What area does your research focus on?
I am an interdisciplinary Sociologist with expertise in the everyday lives of racialised and minority communities. My interests include making meaning from memories of the past shared in the present, intersectionality, migration, Muslim sexualities, environmental policymaking and creative methods.
What are the other key aspects of your role?
I am both teaching and research active. I Module Lead for UG modules for Sociology and Criminology students, provide both dissertation and PhD supervision and am the Bidding Peer Reviewer Lead for the Department. I am also the Lead and founding member of the Department’s Power and Intersecting Inequalities (PII) Research Cluster.
What do you like to do outside of work?
Outside of work, I enjoy travelling and exploring new places. Last year I found a new passion for gardening and growing my own vegetables! Something I never thought I would do. I also enjoy reading, a good coffee and long walks.
What do you think you could particularly offer mentoring support with?
I can support students to build confidence in academia and university life, help PGR students become reflexive thinkers, connect research to everyday lives and the real world, apply innovative and creative methods in research and draw attention to dismantling inequalities. Moreover, I advocate collaborative research and can support students to build and sustain networks for research and knowledge exchange activities.
