Nazim Bharmal
Dr Nazim Bharmal
Research Fellow in the Department of Physics
Unfortunately this mentor is at capacity and is unable to be selected.
What area does your research focus on?
The propagation of light through the atmosphere, for imaging astronomical targets (stars and galaxies), and for space studies (mainly artificial satellites).
What are the other key aspects of your role?
I am an EDI representative from instrumentation into the wider department as well as pushing initiatives locally to foster and enhance a wider research community from PGR through professor levels.
What do you like to do outside of work?
Not use a computer! More seriously gardening—we have an allotment—as well as cycling and reading and honestly vegging out…not feeling guilty about not doing anything!
What do you think you could particularly offer mentoring support with?
- Helping to overcome the issues surrounding loneliness and lack of supervisor support: contextualising these is an important part of understanding personal progress.
- Putting the research into the bigger picture: both for your academic colleagues and the wider world, including the commercial and industrial sectors.
- Providing opportunities to network—including face to face—with those you identify with to overcome the potential isolation of the post-grad experience as an ethnic/cultural minority in a non-diverse part of the UK.
